The new book in the series Modern Art in South Australia, featuring the painter Malcolm Carbins, is OUT NOW!

The work is mostly figurative and landscape orientated, with a modern edge that leans towards the work of artists such as William Dobell, Russell Drysdale, Sydney Nolan and Mark Rothko. It is mostly oil painting and pastel drawings and ranges from modernist portraiture to surrealistic and lyrical abstraction.

You can download the Poster below and print it out if you like. Place it at work or in your favourite shop window. The 2-pdf can be used anywhere. The details-pdf is for use in Adelaide.

“It has come out well - the colours are breathtaking.”

Moon Arrow Press was conceived by Dr. Adam Dutkiewicz (above) in 2006. It intends to publish once or twice a year on Australian Modern and Contemporary Art, in book and possibly CD-ROM formats. The aim is to reveal the fertile tradition of art in South Australia, which historically has fallen in the shadow of the larger eastern states. In future it may venture into literature.

The logo is based on a heraldic crest to which the family of the publisher’s paternal grandmother in Poland was associated. It is also used for the crest of the town, in today’s Ukraine, of Stara Sil (Stara Sol as it was known when his father’s family lived there before the Soviet advance during WWII).

Brothers in Arts: Works by Wladyslaw and Ludwik Dutkiewicz, an exhibition held at Nexus Gallery in Adelaide at the end of 2009, was a great success.

Thanks to all involved and for the support of art lovers, collectors and patrons who attended and purchased works. Long may you enjoy them!

I will present a survey exhibition for Ludwik Dutkiewicz at the end of 2010 at RSASA Gallery, 1st floor, Institute Building, State Library of South Australia. Details to be announced.

Since the exhibition a few people have asked me about Ludwik’s earlier work: but unfortunately there is not much more of quality that has not been sold. As for Wladyslaw, an early still life has subsequently been uncovered in a private collection, where it appears happily ensconsed.

If you own work by either artist please send jpegs (don’t mind the quality) through to this contact address. I am always interested in seeing work by them that I may not know.

Adam Dutkiewicz has been commissioned by the Hahndorf Academy to write the catalogue essay and to open the exhibition PAINTINGS OF THE ADELAIDE HILLS 1880-1960. The exhibition is almost entirely sourced from a private collection and a number of works are for sale. The exhibition runs from opening on 8 May 2009 for six weeks until 21 June.

He is also one of the judges for this year’s Rotary Art Exhibition at the Burnside City Council.

These functions represent a turning point for him after a year away from the art scene in Adelaide. He has confirmed involvement in four exhibitions in the next year or so: a dual exhibition for the artist brothers Wladyslaw and Ludwik Dutkiewicz at Nexus Gallery in September; PolArt (Polish-Australian Artists) at RSASA Gallery in December-January; an exhibition on post-war migrant artists in South Australia for the early-mid next year (at Adelaide Festival Centre); and then a retrospective exhibition for Ludwik Dutkiewicz at the end of the year.

Maria Zagala’s speech summarised the book and Stephen Mould’s research and conceptual orientation in its writing. She said:

“Stephen Mould’s careful research – in particular in the Czech Republic – has unearthed previously unknown, and until now unpublished material. These include student works by Dusan Marek, photographs of the brothers and their family, and perhaps most importantly, the discovery of a series of sketches and drawings made by Voitre while the brothers were interned in the Dillenberg refugee camp in Germany. These illustrations are a revelation, their publication will serve to broaden the appreciation of both artists work.

The scholarship in the book is tempered by what can only be described as a deep regard for the humanity of both men. This seems particularly important in a book about lives that have been marked by the dislocation of the refugee experience. Mould’s ability to convey the texture of the artist’s lives is evident throughout the book. He includes written accounts by both artists of their long voyage to Australia in 1948, a difficult, traumatic time during which the Voitre and Dusan produced some of their most powerful works.

I congratulate Stephen on writing a beautiful book. Although Dusan’s work has come to wider prominence in the past decade with major exhibitions on Surrealism staged by state galleries, the legacy of both artists still needs to be written into the broader accounts of Australian art history. This book will play an important role in securing and extending the reputations of both artists. And I congratulate Adam Dutkiewicz on the publication of this fine, and beautifully illustrated book by Moon Arrow Press. His commitment to researching and publishing the history of modern art in South Australia – and in particular the contribution of émigré artists – will be a source for generations to come.”

Stephen Mould talked about the genesis of the book and how his interest in the art of the brothers evolved. Olga Sankey told amusing stories about the surrealist ambience that surrounded the brothers and the “European gentlemen” who worked as assistants, recounting an instance that concerned a sulphur-crested cockatoo and a cast concrete sculpture of it.

Thanks to all involved on the night and to all the people who helped in the forging of the book.
