Brian Claridge: Architect of Light and Space

The monograph Brian Claridge: Architect of Light and Space, by Adam Dutkiewicz, was launched on 20 May at City West campus, University of South Australia.

The architect practised in Adelaide in his father’s firms, Claridge Hassell & McConnell and Claridge & Gunn, and with Stephenson & Turner until starting a career as an academic at the University of Adelaide in 1970. He was Senior Lecturer in Architecture when he died in 1979.

One of the architect’s daughters wrote:

Dear Adam
Congratulations on yesterday’s presentation and book launch. I thought it went very well. It was extraordinary to see so many people there - all with such fond memories of Dad. It was a very moving experience for me. As I tried to say publicly yesterday (but not very well I’m afraid), on behalf of all family members - our sincere thanks to you and the Architecture Museum for this very much appreciated record and perspective of Dad’s work. It will be treasured by us all.

Lisa Radetti.

Vale Ludwik Dutkiewicz

1984-carpological.JPG
The Polish-origin artist and botanical illustrator Ludwik Dutkiewicz died at home in Adelaide on 30 April. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Above is a painting executed shortly after he retired - Carpological abstract (1984).

Ludwik was an accomplished and celebrated artist in the 1950s and 60s, lecturer at the School of Art and Vice-President or council member of the Contemporary Art Society. He had not painted any pictures since 1990, instead preferring to draw and make innumerable paper sculptures of animals. My sister Ursula took some 400 photographs of this and related material in the few days after his death. It’s a facet of his work I have not included in the monograph I am preparing on his art, which ventured into several streams. We’ll think about how we can expose some of this material to the public at a later date. The family would like to thank the Director, Dr. Stephen Forbes, Chief Botanist at the State Herbarium Dr. Bill Barker, and Cultural Collections Manager Tony Kanellos for helping with the loan of material from the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide to show at the funeral and wake. In the process of selecting work we were introduced to only a fraction of what appears to be over 1000 botanical illustrations executed of his 30 years with the Garden and State Herbarium, until 1983. Ludwik received international recognition for his work in this area, notably his inclusion in the 6th International Exhibition of Botanical Art and Illustration (Pittsburg: Carnegie Mellon University, 1988).

Needless to say, this has had an impact on the proposed schedule for the Marek book (The Birth of Love), which will be delayed a couple of months now.
