The painting by my late father included above, titled Cyclonic offshoot (oil on composition board, 117.0 x 175.0 cm, ca.1969), was sold at auction in Sydney from the Hookers Ltd. Collection about twenty-five years ago. I found that it has been offered again at auction, at Philips in Melbourne, but was offered as a painting by my uncle, who is still alive.
I find this ongoing confusion between the two brothers’ art a continual frustration or bemusement, as their signatures, if not the work itself, is quite distinct. I have asked John Furphy to make corrections for the various provenances in the Australian Art Sales Digest. For those interested, my father’s various signatures are included on the title page of the monograph titled A Matter of Mind, beginning with “Dutkie” or some variation thereof (to 1954), “W.D.”, and occasionally “W. Dutkiewicz”; my uncle’s signature is usually a carefully written script of “L. Dutkiewicz”. Below is an example of his work.
Three more paintings by W. Dukiewicz have been discovered by my Melbourne friend Bogumila Zongollowicz. The best one looks like a cooking scene, dating ca.1952 (below).
The painting included below by W. Dutkiewicz, has turned up in a private collection in Melbourne. It’s a fairly typical example of his figurative painting from ca.1968. The subject might be one of my sisters.
